Armed with aerospace alloy decks and tungsten-carbide traction spikes, a dedicated vanguard of downhill riders is conquering icy toboggan lanes at speeds exceeding 70 kilometers per hour.

Safety inspectors initially warned against the discipline, but refined boot bindings and specialized ceramic friction brakes have brought competitive credibility to the sport.
